Buddhist Nun Stories Glossary of Terms

These "nuns stories" were written with the assistance of a translator and teacher at their nunnery in Himachal Pradesh, India.

I am Karma Damchoe Sangmo and 21 years old. I came from South India at Kollegal. My parents have 5 children and my parent's occupation is farmer. My eldest sister was married during her young age. My youngest cousin is going to the school under the Tibetan Government in Exile and two cousins are with my parent to help for farming.

I did my schooling from South India at Kollegal. My father was expired in the year 2005 and mother is only one to earn in the family. After the death of my father, I left my schooling to help with my family. I requested my mother I wish to become a nun. She was so happy for my wishes.

I was very fortunate to become a nun in this nunnery in 2004. I received many teachings and blessings from my root lama. I am really in need of your kind support to be an educated nun.

I am Karma Tsering Youdol and 9 years old. I am from Gispur village near the border of Tibet. My parents' occupation is farmer. My family has five children. My eldest sister used to help with my parents. My elder brother is very lucky to get chance to go to the school with the help of my uncle. My younger brother is a monk at Sikkim monastery.

I did my schooling till 1 class and my parent took me out from the school as she can't help with financial to send me to the school. I asked my mother if it is not possible to send me to the school then I must join in the nunnery to become a nun. She agreed my desire and decided to send me to the nunnery.

I am Machik from Kinnaur region based in Himachal Pradesh. My parents' occupation is farmer. My parents have 3 children in my family. I am eldest one in my family. My younger sister was married with a village man. She was married during the young age. My youngest sister is staying with my parents to help for the farming work. We don't have any income source except from irrigation. She didn't have chance to go to the school because of family's problem. But she is very much interested to go to the school; due to financial problem there is hindrance to her schooling.

I am very worried about my family's condition and also I am suffering from chest problem and not able to take medicine because there is no one in my life to look after me. But' don't have position to help them solve their problem. I felt very lucky myself to dedicate my life as nun.

I decided myself to become a nun. I have only one goal in my life that I wish to become a nun. I became a nun at age of 15 and was so fortunate to become a nun in the year 1996. The nunnery is very generous to me providing valuable education and Tibetan language since my childhood. I went into three years retreat under the guidance of monastery. I was very happy to complete my 3~ year retreat.
